Development Of Isoscapes To Verify Labelling Claims Relating To The Provenance Of Chicken And Pork - FA0129

Description
The indication of origin is currently mandatory for beef and beef products in the European Union following the bovine spongiform encephalopathy crisis and it has created consumer expectations. The impact assessment of the Commission confirms that the origin of meat appears to be consumers’ prime concern. There are other meats widely consumed in the Union, such as swine, sheep, goat and poultry meat. It is therefore appropriate to impose a mandatory declaration of origin for those products .

There has been anecdotal evidence for some time that the origin of pork and chicken sold in the UK has been mislabelled. This puts home producers at a financial disadvantage because of the costs associated with higher welfare standards in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, there is a suggestion that restaurants are mis-describing the provenance of products such as bacon in cheeseburgers where claims regarding local or national sourcing of products are often made .

An existing Isotope landscape or food origin map (isoscape) has been created for British Beef in the form of a decision making web tool with funding from the FSA and Defra seedcorn:

http://isoscapes.fera.defra.gov.uk/

This tool can be used to determine the geographical origin of beef, which has been of great importance since the introduction of the EU beef labelling regulations. However, with the introduction of the EU Food Information Regulations similar provenance methodology is now required for a wide range of food products and in particular meats such as pork, chicken and lamb.

This proposal is for research funding to develop Isotope origin maps for pork and chicken.
