Tourism values for Natural Capital Accounts - NR0176

The project is a significant part of the natural capital accounts that will contribute to the 2020 target, following the 25 Year Environment Plan. It focuses on the economic gains from tourism and outdoor leisure activity. It was noted that the definition of tourism is too narrow for the purposes of the research (because it is based on overnight stays), therefore the research is based on tourism and outdoor leisure (T&OL), with an awareness of the potential overlaps between tourism and recreation.
This research will devise a transparent and repeatable method for, and provide estimates of, the contribution of different ecosystems to the output of the tourist and outdoor leisure sectors in the UK as part of the UK Natural Capital Accounts. It will be based on the ecosystem accounting principles of the UN System of Environmental and Economic Accounts (SEEA).

Note: Ecosystem attribution matrix, as provided in the supplementary report, contains the process though a portion of total expenditure is attributed as ‘ecosystem contribution’, and then further to each of the broad habitats. Please refer to the Final Report PDF for further context and details of any acronyms that may be used in the matrix spreadsheet.
