Development and testing of monitoring to support the National Pollinator Strategy - WC1101

Description
The National Pollinator Strategy includes an ambition to improve evidence on the status of pollinators and pollinations services by developing a sustainable long-term monitoring programme. This research was a specific commitment in the strategy. It draws together all existing data to produce candidate indicators of change for insect pollinators, and for important crop pollinators.

The project has developed and tested a range of approaches to improving monitoring pollinators and pollination services, through a combination of consultation with major stakeholders and subsequent field trials, to derive a National Pollinator and Pollination Monitoring Framework (NPPMF) to guide future implementation by a range of partners, building on existing citizen science activity.

The report sets out a range of scenarios for strengthening monitoring, including sample size requirements and field methods tested for ease, repeatability and acceptability to volunteers. Scenarios range from no or very low cost options to strengthen existing activity through low cost options for augmenting with additional citizen science to more costly systematic survey using DNA sequencing and pollination deficit assessments.
Objective
1. To identify a robust sampling framework for national pollinator monitoring
2. To develop and test new methods for pollinator monitoring as part of this framework
