BRITISH BEEF ORIGIN PROJECT 2 – improvement of the British beef Isotope Landscape Map (Isocape) - FA0152

Description
The indication of origin is currently mandatory for beef and beef products in the European Union following the bovine spongiform encephalopathy crisis and it has created consumer expectations. The impact assessment of the Commission and subsequent consumer surveys post “Horsegate” confirm that the origin of meat appears to be consumers’ prime concern. Defra has identified a requirement to develop methods to independently verify the declared origin of meat on Country of Origin Labels.

An existing Isotope landscape or food origin map (Isoscape) has been created for British Beef in the form of a geographical origin decision making web tool with previous funding from the FSA (Q01123 renamed Defra FA0205) and Defra seedcorn. This project will use the methodology established in FA0205 to improve the robustness of the decision-making tool, which is currently limited by a lack of authentic beef stable isotope data from East Anglia, the Midlands and the South East of England.

This Defra project will address the limitations of the existing Isoscape and establish a tool that can be used to routinely monitor compliance with British beef origin labelling.
Objective
OBJECTIVE 01: Complete the first collection of 100 authentic British beef from E. Anglia, the Midlands, the South and S. East of England. Completion date – November 2013 (Sub-contractor EBLEX).
OBJECTIVE 02: Complete stable isotope analysis of beef samples obtained during the first round of sampling.
Completion date – March 2014 (Fera and Sub-contractor Food Forensics Ltd).
OBJECTIVE 03: Complete the second collection of 100 authentic British beef from E. Anglia, the Midlands, the South and S. East of England. March/April 2014 (Sub-contractor EBLEX).
OBJECTIVE 04: Complete mid-term report and update meeting with project officer. Mid-term assessment point for project continuation. April 2014 (Fera and sub-contractors).
OBJECTIVE 05: Complete stable isotope analysis of beef samples obtained during the first round of sampling. August 2014 (Fera and sub-contractor Food Forensics Ltd).
OBJECTIVE 06: Complete Bayesian statistics, raster generation and update existing isoscape web-tool. September 2014 (Fera).
OBJECTIVE 07: Complete analysis and interpretation of origin of anonymous challenge samples. October 2014 (Fera and sub-contractor EBLEX).
OBJECTIVE 08: Complete final technical report on developed methodologies and isoscapes. October 2014 (Fera).
