Marine non-indigenous species monitoring and risk management - ME5215

The project will help develop the UK strategy for monitoring and managing marine invasive non-native species (INNS) by identifying the high risk pathways and area of introduction for marine INNS, assessing the suitability of current monitoring programmes for INNS, and creating an offshore monitoring network, including an assessment of its suitability as an early warning system.
To improve management decisions on marine invasive non-native (INNS) species in the UK by building the evidence base, and to contribute to the development of the UK’s approach to (i) reduce the risk of introduction and (ii) monitor the abundance, distribution and number of new introductions of INNS, to contribute to the UK’s approach to descriptor 2 of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. To identify the most appropriate monitoring strategy for the ongoing assessment of INNS, including the evaluation of a risk-based management approach. Specific objectives:
-Refine the pathway assessment to form a robust and evidence based network analysis to assist in the development of a risk based monitoring programme, and to determine the most effective monitoring strategy to optimise detection.
-Provide advice on the development of a risk based monitoring programme.
-Review existing marine monitoring programmes and their suitability for detection of marine NIS and invasive species, to provide evidence based advice on the validity of various monitoring strategies
-Determine the effectiveness of Cefas buoy network as a platform for early warning systems, and refine the sampling methodology
-Provide a co-ordinating role between this project, the Pathways Project and other non-native relevant projects.
