Stable isotope and Multi element analysis of food and soil samples for TRACE - FA0213

Description
The work at FERA, for Work Package 1 of the TRACE project (“Tracing the origin of Food”), is focused on the analysis of a range of food matrices, soils and water for the stable light isotope ratio, trace element composition and strontium isotope ratio from 21 sites across Europe. The objective of the study is three fold, 1) to show that that trace elements and strontium isotope ratio profiles created by geological features across Europe are reflected in the plant and animal life growing in those regions, 2) to confirm existing relationships and identify new relationships between geochemical, morphology and bioclimatic factors and the stable light isotope ratios of agricultural plants and animals, 3) to use all of these relationships to develop a generic traceability system that can readily verify the authenticity of food with respect to its European geographical origin.
The work at FERA has been supplemented by similar analyses at a further 15 scientific Institutes across Europe to provide analysis of 12,200 food, soil and water samples. (Over 647,000 element concentration and isotopic data points generated). The information, in combination with chemometric analysis, will be used to exploit current annual geological and groundwater maps to generate a ‘European Food Origin Map’ (Figure 1)
The “Food Origin Map” is a major research product of TRACE. The resulting specifications will be made readily accessible to enforcement agencies and industry by encoding labels with this extrapolative data. FOM will allow verification of origin by low cost analysis by contract laboratories.
The FERA/ FSA contribution to the development of the European food map has been restricted to the analysis of samples. The responsibility for interrogation of the data and development of the food maps falls to other partners in the TRACE project
