An assessment of the biodegradable content of mixed municipal and commercial and industrial waste - WR1003

Description
Aims

Defra requires proposals for a research project that will provide:
1. a clear understanding of the biodegradable and non-biodegradable content of ‘the 70% of mixed municipal waste’ classified under code 20.03.01 of the European Waste Catalogue (EWC) arriving at landfill;
2. an understanding of the biodegradable content of any other putrescible wastes*, including commercial and industrial wastes, arriving at landfill; and
3. further analysis of biodegradable wastes to understand the degradable organic carbon (DOC), dissimilable degradable organic carbon (DDOC) and rate of decay of putrescible wastes for use in the National GreenHouse Gas (GHG) Inventory.

*Note: Putrescible Wastes may be defined as kitchen and garden wastes and other similar plant and animal derived material which decomposes rapidly in the presence of oxygen.
