Monitoring and evaluation of Nature Improvement Areas: Phase 2 - WC1061

Description
This project aims to develop and provide monitoring and evaluation of the Nature Improvement Areas (NIAs) which were initiated in 2012 with grant aid from Defra as a commitment in Biodiversity 2020. Defra have funded this project to establish a monitoring and evaluation framework to enable reporting against progress towards the NIA objectives, over their 3 year grant funded period.

There is an opportunity to further develop the monitoring and evaluation framework and to promote the initiative of partnership working toward establishment of coherent ecological networks, in keeping with the findings of the Making Space for Nature (Lawton et al. 2011) which will be considered as the results are produced. Outputs include the monitoring and evaluation framework, protocols for the indicators, an on line tool for data capture and analysis, guidance and other information sharing via the Natural England NIA website, workshops and interactions with the NIAs, annual reports against their progress and the concluding overall report that will provide the evidence for the evaluation against a counterfactual (i.e. if there had been no NIA initiative) of this policy for consideration by policy makers and those involved in the NIA and other landscape scale initiatives.
Objective
The project aims to refine and develop the monitoring and evaluation framework and information sharing initiated on Phase 1 towards inspiring others to design and implement landscape scale approaches for conservation of biodiversity and other benefits.

The project will require analysis and reporting under the NIA monitoring and evaluation framework, identification of gaps and ways to fill these and drawing out the lessons learned to improve the ecological and socio-economic benefits of NIAs. Review of progress in the Monitoring and Evaluation Frame work, data acquisition and analysis, consultation with others and synthesis of key messages and results from the NIA initiatives relating these to the commitments set out in the NEWP and new EBS, and the Habitats Directive.
