Effects of woodland structure on woodland bird populations – an assessment of the effects of changes in woodland structure on bird populations as a result of woodland management practices and deer browsing - WC0793

The project will investigate the effect of changes in woodland structure on priority woodland bird species. In particular the project will look at the effects of management practices (including cessation of management) and deer browsing on woodland structure and the resulting impact on woodland birds. The project will generate options for the management of woodlands for the benefit of declining and other priority woodland species.
1. Investigate effects of changes in woodland management on woodland bird species in the UK, both at a woodland bird community and individual species level.

2. Investigate changes in woodland structure brought about through deer browsing and the effects of these changes on woodland birds.

3. Review potential future trends in woodland management practices e.g. emerging forest management practices like biofuels, woodland grant schemes and the potential effects and silvicultural responses to climate change and the implications that these may have for woodland birds.
