Factors affecting the Microbial quality of shellfish. - WT1001

Description
The project seeks to better understand the relationship between shellfish water quality and shellfish flesh to improve planning of remedial action in order to progress towards meeting the shellfish flesh guideline standard for faecal coliforms under the Shellfish Waters Directive.
Objective
Main Deliverables/Outputs

To gain a better understanding of the site-specific factors that influence the take-up of Faecal Indicator Organisms by shellfish.

Post-scheme appraisals to determine the effectiveness of previous water company investment (to improve point source discharges) in improving the quality of shellfish flesh.

To provide a realistic assessment on what improvements can be achieved in the short to medium term (2015).

To ensure remedial actions are achievable and will result in real improvement.

Overall we are looking for a better targeting of investment which in the past has not consistently delivered the expected improvement.

To obtain detailed information on all of (or a selection of) the 124 shellfish waters. The information to be analysed to determine common factors that have a significant influence on the quality of shellfish flesh.

To understand better how strong the link is between shellfish quality and water quality, and why the ratios apparently differ so widely from one site to another.

To determine the improvement (or otherwise) in shellfish quality at all shellfish waters for which water company investment has already been made.

Outputs
Information to enable us to understand better the possible causes of and influences on FIO contamination of shellfish flesh.

Information as to the effectiveness of previous water company investment, to inform future investment decisions.

Specific recommendations as to most cost effective remedial measures
