Remote measurement of pen thermal environment - AW0926

MAFF Animal Welfare Division has requested a scientific evaluation of the feasibility of using pen surface (roof) temperature as an indicator of the thermal environment within the pen on stationary sheep transport vehicles. The primary requirement is to validate the use of remote surface temperature measurement (using a non-contact infra-red thermometer) as an alternative to direct air temperature measurement. If the approach is validate then this facilitates greatly the routine checking of pen temperatures on vehicles in accordance with WATO 97. The data will be collected and analysed by Silsoe and fully reported on completion of the research.
