Diagnosis and surveillance for arbovirus infection, rinderpest virus infection and capripox infection of livestock - SE1616

Description
Capripoxvirus diseases - sheep pox, goat pox and lumpy skin disease of cattle - are endemic in Africa, the Middle East, Turkey and Asia. Rinderpest and peste des petits ruminants (PPR) are endemic in Africa, the Middle East, Turkey and most of Asia. Arbovirus diseases - bluetongue, African horse sickness and epizootic haemorrhagic disease - are endemic in temporate and tropical areas where suitable insect vectors exist.
Increased legal and illegal movement of animals has made the UK more vulnerable to the introduction of these viruses.
Climatic warming will extend the geographical distribution of vectors capable of transmitting arboviruses to possibly include the UK
Animals suspected of infection with these viruses must be quickly and reliably identified and tested to reduce the consequences of international and national trade restrictions.

Objective
01 To provide a 24 hour diagnostic service, depending on the quality of the sample, results can be available within 6 hours of receipt.
02 To maintain capacity to be able to handle on an annual basis:
200 samples for virus diagnosis - arbovirus, capripox, rinderpest
1000 serum samples and 40 samples for screening for virus contamination.
03 To introduce, when validated, new tests in order to improve the service in terms of timeliness, efficiency and sensitivity.
04 To inform the Ministry of Agriculture of any results which may have significance for disease surveillance or control in the U.K.
