Soil phosphorus and heavy metal contents on the nutrient demonstration farms - SP0505

Description
The overall objective of the study is to measure topsoil phosphorus (P) and heavy metal concentrations on three of the Nutrient Demonstration Farms (viz: Betley, Cheshire; Middleton, E. Yorkshire; and Rettendon, Essex) and to assess the rate at which soil P and heavy metals are accumulating on all four of the Demonstration Farms.
Soil samples will be taken on 3 of the Nutrient Demonstration Farms in 1999 (35 fields in total) and will be analysed for phosphorus (total and Olsen extractable P) and total heavy metal concentrations (zinc, copper, nickel, cadmium, chromium and lead) from designated areas. Additionally, soil samples will be taken annually from permanent magnetically marked sampling points (16 fields on the 3 farms) to assess changes in soil P availability (Olsen, calcium chloride and water extractable P), where P inputs have been withheld (Betley) and where manure additions continue to be made (Rettenden and Middleton). Heavy metal surpluses will be calculated on the four Nutrient Demonstration Farms and along with the previously calculated P surpluses, the rate at which topsoil heavy metal and P levels are accumulating will be estimated. The management practices required to recycle manures in accordance with the MAFF Water Code will also be assessed.
The work addresses MAFF’s policy objectives of quantifying and limiting P losses from agricultural systems, and assessing the implications of complying with the MAFF Water Code phosphorus management guidelines. Also, in providing a sound scientific base to ensure that agricultural soils in England and Wales are not subject to long-term irreversible degradation as a result of heavy metal pollution.
Objective
The overall objective of the project is to measure topsoil phosphorus and heavy metal concentrations on three of the Nutrient Demonstration Farms, and to assess the rate at which soil P and heavy metals are accumulating on all four of the Demonstration Farms3.

The specific scientific objectives are:

1. To determine topsoil phosphorus and heavy metal concentrations on three of the Nutrient Demonstration Farms.

2. To quantify changes in soil extractable P levels over time where P inputs are withheld or continue to be made via farm manure additions.

3. To establish the rate at which topsoil phosphorus and heavy metal levels are accumulating using farm budget calculations.

4. To assess the management practices required to recycle manures in accordance with the MAFF Water Code phosphorus management guidelines.
