Root signalling - HH1332SPC
|
Description
This project will examine the function of the important stress hormone abscisic acid (ABA) as a root-sourced signal that mediates responses to both salinity and water stress. It will build on the results of previous research (HH1321 SPC) that focused entirely on salinity stress. The new project will use novel transgenic plants which over-produce ABA in both stressed and unstressed conditions to determine whether there is a common mechanism of response to both salinity and water deficit. The research will also examine the role of ABA as a generic signal that mediates carbohydrate metabolism and the associated changes in root and shoot growth and physiology. These results will improve understanding of the mechanisms of root-stress, provide information on how to enhance production efficiency of protected crops, and establish improved guidelines of root-stress management for increasing crop quality and productivity. |
Objective
The overall objective of the project is to compare the role of ABA as a root-to-shoot signal in mediating plant responses to both salinity and water deficit, in order to determine whether it operates as a common signal for both types of stress. This will be achieved through the following objectives.
01 To determine the role of ABA in mediating the effects of root-sourced salinity and water deficit on shoot growth and physiology
02 To quantify the effects of salinity and water deficit on resource allocation between the roots and shoots
03 To determine the role of ABA in carbohydrate metabolism under salinity and water deficit stress
04 To quantify the link between carbohydrate accumulation, resource allocation and ABA signalling in whole plants under salinity and water deficit stresses
05 To investigate phage display as a new technology to identify ABA receptors involved in ABA signalling
