Slug control using novel management systems - CE0411

Description
This project is directed at the discovery and development of novel technologies for the management of slug pest problems in UK agricultural systems (in particular winter wheat and oilseed rape). The primary rationale is that a better understanding of the physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology of reproductive and developmental processes in terrestrial molluscs, will identify specific targets for the development of novel systems producing deleterious effects in target molluscs, but being sufficiently specific to have only minimal impact on non-target organisms, the environment and the consumer.
Objective
1) To investigate the physiology and biochemistry of terrestrial molluscan endocrine systems regulating development (including protandry)and reproduction (including coutship and mating behaviour)

2) To isolate and identify the endogenous hormones and neuropeptides regulating endocrine gland activity in representative molluscan species, and to determine their physiological role and their potential for the development of novel slug control systems.

3)To isolate and clone the genes coding for hormones and endocrine regulating peptides in molluscs, and produce efficient expression vectors for these peptides in order to evaluate their potential as slug pest management agents.
