Immunocompetence in fish following exposure to contaminated bottom sediments. - AE0605

Description
R&D Summary Objectives:- Determine, in labatory experiments, whether the polluted environment has any effect on the imune system of dabs, develop suitable indicator tests and determine whether observed effects on immunocompetence leads to increased disease susceptibility. Key customer purpose:- Support MAFF (Weymouth) reasearch examining the possible effects of marine pollution on disease suseptibility. Alert MAFF to the need to modify existing pollution controls.
Objective
(i) to determine, in laboratory experiments, whether the polluted environment has any effect on the immune system of the fish (ii) to develop suitable tests which could later be applied to field studies as well as to laboratory work (iii) to determine whether any observed effects on immunocompetence may lead to increased disease susceptibility.
