The effect on viability of mycobacterium bovis of freezing samples prior to cultural testing - SE3201

The Krebs report has proposed the need to carry out a trial to establish in a sound scientific manner the role that the badger has in the incidence of Mycobacterium bovis infection in cattle. The proposal, if implemented, will result in a considerable increase in the number of submissions for culture and give large fluctuations in submission number. There is an inability to predict the requirement for culture with any accuracy. It is anticipated that the number of samples submitted for culture will exceed the avaliale capacity to culture M. bovis in short-term periods. To counteract this it has been proposed that material be stored frozen prior to culture. Thus information will be required to determine if freezing samples reduces the number of infected animals detected in subsequent cultural testing. If any reductionin sensitivity is quantified this can be taken into account in the analysis of subsequent trial data.

The main objective of the proposed study is to quantify the effects of storage by freezing on the sensitivity of Mycobacterium bovis culture.
