Improving and exploiting disease tolerance in cereals - CE0531
|
Description
Disease tolerance, which reduces loss per unit disease, has been identified as a key mechanism by which dependence on pesticide use could be reduced - with advantages to the MAFF policy objectives of pesticide use minimisation, economic efficiency and the sustainability of genetic resources. Progress towards improving and exploiting tolerance will be more efficient if:
· Candidate traits postulated to associate with tolerance are
confirmed.
· Traits found to be beneficial, can be associated with the genes that
code for them.
· The effect of environmental variables on the expression of tolerance
traits, can be accounted for when making crop management decisions.
Results from the research proposed here would be used to improve predictive precision in assessing the fungicide requirement of individual crops, aid variety evaluation and provide applied strategic information, of value in improving the efficiency of breeding disease tolerant crops.
