Genetic improvement of lettuce. - HH0911SFV

Description
The objective of the project is to develop technology (DNA markers/QTL analysis, clean gene transformation) to increase the speed and efficiency of breeding lettuce varieties. Resistance to some of the main UK lettuce pests and diseases (downy mildew, Myzus persicae, lettuce big vein virus) will be used as target characters to demonstrate the efficacy of the technology. Sources of resistance will be accessed from the Vegetable Gene Bank. Material and information produced by the research will enable brassica breeders to provide UK growers with resistant varieties leading to a reduction in pesticide usage. The research programme addresses the policy and scientific objectives as given in the MAFF ROAME A for programme HH09 - Breeding for Annual Crops.
Objective
The project has three objectives:
01. To complete a QTL analysis leading to the identification of molecular markers for: Field resistance to Bremia lactucae Quantitative resistance to Myzus persicae
02. To determine the genetic control of resistance to lettuce big vein virus from the related wild species Lactuca virosa.
03. To produce transformed lettuce plants using a `clean-gene` transformation system
