To complete development of the Land Information System (LandIs) (Follow on SR0102) - LE0304

Description
(Transferring to SR0102 in 1994/95)

LE0304. Land use and soil erosion: Complete development of SLRC Project No. 83/3908.

The MAFF Land Information System (LandIS) contains auger bore data from a large number of sites visited during the National Soil Map Survey, the National Soil Inventory and strategic surveys at a scale of 1:50,000, undertaken between 1983 and 1987. The aim of this project is the enhancement of this information base by the addition of more data on lowland peat soils, recorded during the National Peat Survey of the Lowlands of England and Wales. This information is currently stored on cards in computer compatible form, as was the case for the auger bore data. The data on the cards will be checked, punch processed and validated, before being loaded into the LandIS and master files. These files will then be updated so that data is ready for retrieval or manipulation through the menu access system. It is anticipated that approximately 800 Peat Survey boring records from 1500 fenland sites will be processed in the first year, followed by data from a further 4200 peat survey sites in the subsequent 2 year period.
