Soil survey, sampling and analysis for ECN - CC0407

The Environmental Change Network (ECN), began in 1992 and comprises a network of sites throughout the UK at which a large number of measurements are made on a regular basis. Its aim is to obtain comparable long-term datasets by measurement at regular intervals as a means of identifying and understand the causes of environmental change. Until recently the UK has had no national long-term monitoring programme collecting data for a range of physical and biological factors The UK’s Environmental Change Network has therefore been set up to obtain this data and to make it available as a basis for research and prediction. The ECN includes 11 terrestrial sites and approximately 28 aquatic sites that have been selected on previous history of data collection, land use and available funding.
One of the core environmental factors for which data is collected is the soil. The methods for soil sampling and analysis as partof ECN follow a series of developing protocols. When a site is established a field survey, to show soil variation and distribution is undertaken where practicablefrom which the area most suited for soil sampling can be chosen. A 5year and 20 year rolling programme of soil collection within a target sampling site (TSS) and analysis of the collected samples is set out in the published protocols. The aim being to characterise and quantify soil; physical and chemical properties to provide baseline data and enable the identification of changes of properties with time.
1. To identify repeat sampling sites at the ECN sites of Wytham, North Wyke, Alice Holt, Moor House, Porton Down and Snowdon.
2. To sample the soils at each site and prepare and analyse them following published protocols. To complete outstanding analysis from the first 5 and 20 year samplings.
3. To make the data available to the ECN site managers and the coordinating body of NERC.

The objectives and associated milestones may change to take account of any new sites that enter into the Network.
