Communication of work on moorland management to land managers policy advisors & research community (old BD0122) - BD1217

Description

Practical application of research into management of heather moorland and other upland habitats may be delayed by an absence of a co-ordinated approach towards communication of results between scientific and end-user communities. This study aims to generate debate and discussion of cost-effective management of upland habitats in order to enhance biodiversity and main the economic and environmental vigour of upland communities. It will facilitate dissemination of information between the research community and land managers by implementation of a series of inter-related activities including: consultation with research organisations concerned with moorland management in order to identify key unpublished findings from MAFF-funded R&D and target key subject areas for future work; organisation of theme-based workshops/discussion groups based upon findings of the consultation exercise; production of practical guidelines/technical notes on key issues and concerns relating to moorland management (e.g. enhancement of heather cover on degraded moor, control of competitive or unpalatable grasses); and submission of unpublished findings of MAFF-funded research and monitoring to refereed scientific journals (where appropriate).
