Forecasting diseases of allium crops. - HH1742SFV
|
Description
Two of the major diseases of alliums are downey mildew of onions caused by Peronospera destructor and leek rust caused by P. illii. The aim of this research is to identify key life cycle stages of these pathogens and develop relationships with environmental parameters towards the deveopment of disease forecasting models. Information will be gathered through laboratory, glasshouse, controlled environment and field studies.
This work relates to MAFF policy objectives of rationalising and reducing pesticide use which is desirable for both environment and consumer.
The data will identify key periods of risk for each disease and will lead to accurate timing of fungicide treatments. This should lead to a reduction in losses and increased competitiveness of UK horticulture. The occurence of factors which determine the accuracy of disease forecasts will also be investigated. |
