Genetic improvement of hops (cont. of HH1006SHO) - HH1015SHO

Description
Hop production in the UK is devided approximately equally between the South East and the West Midlands. The total area in production in 1995 was 3094 ha of which 1034 ha produced hops to be used for their aroma qualities, and 2060 ha produced hops to be used for imparting bitterness to beer. A total of 4078 tonnes of hops were harvested with an estimated value of £15m.

This project provides strategic underpinning for a seperately-funded breeding programme to develop commercial hop varieties, resistent to the major fungal diseases ad insect pests.

This project aims to identify elite hop breeding lines conferring to their progeny high levels of resistance to pests and pathogens and showing good general combining ability for cone and habit characteristics. It will concentrate on resistance to hop wilt and downy mildew in particular. Such elite lines will be transferred to an industry-funded breeding programme for use as parental material to produce finished varieties.

Resistant hop genotypes identified from this project will be made available for complemantary projects on integrated pest management and agronomic studies in hops.
