Genetic improvement of strawberry (cont. HH1002SSF). - HH1013SSF

Description
Strawberries are the most important of the UK fruit crops, occupying an area of approximately 5200 ha with a total production of 42000 tonnes and a value for marketed output of £61 m in 1994.
The cropped area has decreased by approximately 1750 ha snice 1984, but there has been no corresponding decrease in production, reflecting a trend to more intensive growing systems giving a higher yield per hectare.
There have been a number of areas that have been identified to increase UK competativeness and promote growth:
Enhanced quality and product development/differentiation.
Reduced production costs.
Extension of the season.
Improved shelf life.

This project continues on from previous MAFF-funded work whci has provided the strategic research to underpin the variety development programme funded by meosis Ltd. during this time 6 new varieties have been released.

The major diseases of strawberry in the UK are wilt, red core, crown rot, grey mold and powdery mildew which are controlled primarily by chemical spays.

Field and glasshouse screening techniques will be used to produce breeding lines with enhanced resistance to wilt, crown rot, powdery mildew and blossom weevil. Late-flowering and everbearing lines with improved fruit quality and agronomic features will also be produced. The inheritance of factors affecting fruit size will be investigated to devise a strategy for improving average berry weight, particularly in everbearing varieties. Objective measuring systems for the important fruit quality characteristics will be developed. Germplasm produced will be used in the industry-funded variety development programme to produce improved varieties for UK growers in the future.
