Dry Deposition of S-35 to Crop Surfaces - RP0148

S-35 can be released to the atmosphere from nuclear reactor blowdown, since it is formed by the activation of impurities within the coolant gas. S-35 can be released in the form of CO35S or as H235S. Whilst information is availableon the atmospheric behaviour of these compounds, a review by Dollard concluded that for H235S , at least, there was little information available to predict dry deposition. The purpose of the proposed study is to assess the chemical forms of S-35 released from reactors, assembling information on their atmospheric lifetimes and on their dry deposition rates.Recommendations will be made on the design and nature of any experimental programmes required to elucidate uncertainties in the dry deposition of S35 to foodstuffs.
i)To assemble and review literature available on the form and behaviour of S-35 in the environment ii)To assess the information available to predict deposition velocities for the various forms of S-35, according to different surface types iii)To identify shortcomings in the knowledge of various deposition processes and to recommend an experimental methodology and strategy for work which will fill gaps in the existing knowledge
