Assessing and correcting imprecision in N fertiliser decision-making - NT1205

Description
In order to restrict nitrate leaching from arable land and minimise the need to compensate farmers for consequent losses of yield, MAFF needs to identify or devise practices which maximise crop recovery of soil N and most effectively supplement these with fertiliser N. Acquisition of this knowledge will improve guidelines for crop husbandry and efficient fertiliser use on arable crops over a range of soil types. By examining existing data sets for N fertiliser application to arable crops, this study will aim to provide guidance on the impact of variation in fertiliser and crop value on optimum N amounts for different growing conditions. Guidance will also be provided on the relative risks of under- and over-fertilising for different crops and growing conditions. The value of using N analysis of crop produce to retrospectively check on the imprecision of N use will also be assessed.
