Functional impact of genetically modified micro-organisms in soil. - RG0103

To determine the impact of GMMOs on soil processes important for plant nutrition and health, a stepwise approach will be followed: 1. Development of sensitive bio-assays to determine the combination of GMMOs and the environmental conditions which result in an impact on ecosystem functioning. Bio-assays will be set up using small, undisturbed microcosms to test 4 GMMOs; two different plants; abiotic factors; three different soil types. Quick assays will be used to determine the combination of environmental conditions and GMMOs that might have an impact. 2. Further identification of soil processes that are affected by GMMO introductions. A more targeted approach will be used for those treatments which show effects. 3. In depth studies on GMMO impact on soil processes and microbial population dynamics. A selection of GMMOs and conditions that show most promise will be used for a more targeted approach. 4. Impact analysis.
