Manure nitrogen model - WA0508

WA0508. Control of nitrate and other nutrient pollution from agriculture.

This study will aim to develop a simple working model/decision support system for predicting crop N availability and losses following applications of organic manures to land. The model aims to increase understanding of the relative importance of factors affecting manure N availability to crops and N losses by various pathways. In the initial stage of the study, a simple information input and decision flowchart will be compiled on a spreadsheet, based on published research results and existing advisory experience. Results from current ADAS and other research will be transformed into a form that will allow testing and validation of the model. If successful, the model will be used directly to improve advice on utilization of organic manures and minimize pollution risks. Increased flexibility of advice will be of great benefit to policy makers, researchers, consultants and farmers.
