Development of a Simplified Radioanalytical Procedure for Ruthenium. - RP0303

Ruthenium occours in several chemical forms. By exploiting the chemistry of some of these species, the project aims to produce an analytical procedure that requires fewer chemical manipulations. Potentail procedures are: i) the reduction of Ru(VI)/Ru(VII) to centrifugable RuO2, and ii) the extraction of Ru(VI)/Ru(VII) or Ru(II)/Ru(III) into an organic phase.
The final objective of this work is the development of an analytical procedure for the determniation of Ru-106 which will facilitate its determination in milk at levels less than 4 Bq/l. This objective will be met by recognizing the unique chemistry of ruthenium which enable the element to exsist simultaneously in several oxidation states, and in particular as a large number of nitrosylruthenium(II) species. These are species which are perhaps the key to the develpoment of an improved radioanalytical procedure.
