Background Levels of Carbon-14 in Agricultural Samples Produced Around Nuclear Sites - RP0301

The project aims to determine the background levels of carbon-14 around nuclear sites by measuring the carbon-14 content of tree rings formed prior to the commencement of nuclear operations. Suitable samples will be obtained from trees located near the sites of interest, as well as remote sites. Potential variations in ambient carbon-14 levels across a range of agricultural produce will also be investigated through the accurate measurement of carbon-14 levels in a wide range of samples produced at a single site remote from any local anthropogenic sources.
The final objective is to improve the accuracy of radiological dose assessments regarding cardon-14 discharges from the nuclear fuel cycle.
