Tallow, tyres, wood and oils: a scoping review of resource management approaches - EV1006

Description
Investigate the published research on the following technical questions:-
Tyres
1. Has any research been undertaken on the leaching of tyres when used as flood defences
Tallow
1. Has any major research/ evidence gathering been done on the environmental effects of disposing of tallow?
2. Has any evidence work been undertaken on the use/ production of biofuel from tallow? If so, what were the findings? Is rendered animal fat suitable? Any barriers to production? Any advantages/ drawbacks of using this as a biofuel compared with vegetable oil?
Wood
1. After considering responses to the call for evidence on the reduction of wood waste in landfill, we identified a number of gaps in evidence that we intend to address. These include:
a. The nature of wood going to landfill;
b. How wood reacts in landfill and the methane emissions generated;
c. The carbon sequestration effects of wood in landfill;
d. The effect of wood preservatives on wood entering landfill
Mineral Oil
1. Has any work been undertaken on the regeneration of used oil, including the effectiveness of regenerated oil, the processes involved and any barriers to regeneration?
2. Has any work been done on emissions from burning used oil, including the risks to the environment and human health?
Vegetable Oil
1. Has any study looked at the use and production of biofuel from waste cooking oil? If so, what were the findings? Were any issues identified, including barriers to production and the performance of biofuel?
2. Has any work been undertaken on the recycling of used cooking oil?
3. Have any projects considered different ways of disposing of used cooking oil e.g. biological treatment to break down oil and grease?

Wood (if still required)

To review the available research, or verify that gaps exist, in the topic areas identified above. This short review will report at the end of March 2013.

The review will result in a short report with subheadings for each of the research areas.

Each sub- head will list the research identified that is pertinent to the topic, include author, journal, source etc. and detail as to whether it is peer reviewed and / or the status of the publication. We will also provide links where available, and, where relevant to the question, the key research finding.

At the end of each research topic there will be a summary comment providing an update on the status of the ‘gap’ and / or the published research addressing the gap as identified.
