Screening and breeding of common ash, Fraxinus excelsior, for resistance to Chalara fraxinae (Living Ash Project) - TH0133

Description
Project objectives: To investigate and identify resistance/tolerance to chalara (ash dieback pathogen) from within UK and wider European provences of ash, especially from established provenance trees and high-quality breeding material. This will support longer-term maintenance of ash as a tree species in the UK landscape and wider environment, inclusing as a commercially-grown species, by providing potential stock for longer-term selection and breeding programmes.
Procurement rationale: Single tender with Earth Trust consortium, on the basis of technical expertise and their ownership or acces to the relevant provenance trials and seedling/tree stock. There is no other provider. Invitation to tender is based on an outline proposal solicited by Defra (i.e. following direct contact with the SoS).
Policy Justification: The work specifically addressed Objective 2 (identifying and developing ash resistance to chalara) of the interim Defra Chalara Control Plan (endorsed by Defra CSA and SoS). The project contributes to the wider Tree Health and Plant Biosecurity Action Plan. It is consistent with the emerging outputs of the Expert Task Force convened by Defra's CSA, and our TH&PB Evidence Plan. The work therefore directly supports chalara-ash-dieback policy and its implementation (mitigating impacts from this newly arrived pathogen). |
