Supporting More Robust and Cost-Effective Biodiversity Surveillance and Data Management in the Voluntary Sector; 2011-2014 - WC1041

The aim of the project is to improve the quality, consistency and policy relevance of biodiversity monitoring and surveillance undertaken by volunteers. The project will work closely with representatives from that sector to ensure that they are fully engaged in effort to improve recording. Data showing species distribution, status and trends is used to inform decision making (including on major infrastructure projects), target conservation effort, support national reporting and underpin research. Of the 90 million species occurrence records available on the National Biodiversity Network Gateway, over 90% is sourced from the voluntary sector. Volunteer recording data are used in five of the 24 UK indicators that are published to show UK progress with international targets. Government is looking to volunteers to provide data on pollinator abundance. In 2011 Defra published a commitment in the Natural Environment White Paper (NEWP) to create a new fund for biodiversity recording in the voluntary sector to ensure high quality data is available to support local decision making as well as research and national reporting. The project is administered by Natural England and designed to create lasting change in the practices of volunteer recording community to provide improved value from their efforts.
• To increase the quality and relevance of biodiversity data available to national and local users, to support decision making, research and conservation planning.
• To assist LRCs, and other local groups, in the provision of a more effective and efficient service to data users, including through the development and piloting of new data entry and management systems.
• To work with the voluntary sector more widely to develop more structured approaches to data collection, including the development of local pilots that support collaboration between local groups and national societies.
