Review of industry, Government and other action to improve the sustainability of fish and shellfish production and consumption - EV0444

Description
As part of Defra’s work on Sustainable Consumption and Production, we are developing ten pilot product roadmaps to
• identify sustainability impacts across a range of environmentally challenging products,
• look at the existing business, Government and other actions to address those impacts, highlight any gaps
• work with representatives from across the product supply chain to develop a voluntary action plan to address those impacts and
• implement the voluntary action plan.

One of the ten pilot products is fish and shellfish, and this project will deliver the first two of the roadmap steps listed above.

An environmental impact analysis of fish and shellfish production and consumption was commissioned by Defra “Royal Haskoning – “Sustainable production and consumption of fish and shell fish: Environmental Impact analysis” June 2007”.
Objective
• To identify the sustainability impacts (environmental, social and health) across the lifecycle of fish & shellfish - from raw materials acquisition to end of life - based on existing evidence. The focus of this research includes relevant social and health impacts as well as environmental impacts. The evidence analysed includes international and UK sources.
• To identify market trends and consumption statistics to establish UK consumption volumes and the impacts associated with this consumption – wherever in the world those impacts occur.
• To review and assess the evidence for robustness and identify any uncertainties and evidence gaps.
• To identify and analyse the effectiveness of existing EU, UK and international action (by Government, business and others) to improve the sustainability performance of fish & shellfish.
• To highlight gaps and make policy suggestions for improved and additional actions to deliver sustainability improvements.
