Factors that influence plasmid conjugation between bacteria in the phytosphere of crop plants - RG0101

(a)Extend our investigations into the phylogeny, distribution and abundance of transfer proficient plasmids in bacteria indigenous to the phytosphere of crop plants. (b) Investigate biotic (nutrient, plant species, plant age, microbial population density) and abiotic (temperature, pH, soil type, humidity) factors that influence conjugation in situ using our rhizosphere gene transfer model (submitted for publication). (c) Determine the extent to which natural transfer proficient plasmids carry chromosomal mobilizing activity (cma). (d) Investigate the frequency of plasmid mediated cma and horizontal bacterial gene transfer in situ.
