Business research:encouraging more pro-environmental behaviour amongst SMEs - EV0505

Description
There is growing awareness that business resource efficiency advice may need to be re-focused to engage the wide variety of small medium businesss enterprises (SMEs), encourage faster progress, and make best use of funding. Defra wishes to strengthen the evidence base to inform such developments, in particular to enable a more tailored and segmented approach.
This project will comprise three parts:
· Part 1 will map existing environmental advice for SMEs.
· Part 2 will (a) assess the importance of factors that encourage and discourage adoption of pro-environmental behaviour among SMEs; (b) explore the effectiveness of different advice formats and sources; (c) consider possible typologies of SMEs.
· Part 3 will review business segmentation models used by advice providers as well as in non-environmental contexts.

In order to create a resource that can be developed systematically in future and make best use of the time available, we will use a combination of expert narrative review and systematic rapid evidence assessment (SREA) tools and frameworks developed by the EPPI-Centre. An advisory Expert Panel, composed of representatives from business support and environmental advice providers will assist throughout.
We will utilize the evidence combined with expert opinion to identify (1) where more advice is needed; (2) how to improve awareness, access, and use of advice; (3) what motivations to focus on and barriers to address; (4) how advice and other support should be tailored to suit different types of SMEs; (5) whether and how to develop an environmental segmentation model; (6) research needed to fill key gaps in the evidence.
