HBDSEG Feeder Report - Joint Nature Conservation Committee Contribution - ME4143

The Monitoring & Assessment Policy Committee has asked the Monitoring & Assessment Reporting Group (MARG) to produce a second State of UK Seas report, or Charting Progress 2 as a follow-on to Charting Progress (2005). This report is due for publication in 2010 and requires the production of feeder reports from each of the three Evidence Groups that report to MARG.

The Healthy and Biologically Diverse Seas Evidence Group (HBDSEG) has a remit which is highly relevant to work already undertaken by the JNCC, such that the JNCC has offered to provide the coordinating lead authorship of four of the chapters making up the feeder report: birds (seabirds and waterbirds); habitats; cetaceans and turtles.

A key challenge in producing the HBDSEG feeder report will be the use of consistent assessment approaches that enables the UK to ‘chart progress’ towards the vision of ‘clean, safe, biologically diverse, productive and healthy seas’ and produce a report which can form the basis of the 2012 Marine Strategy Framework Directive initial assessment and contribute to the OSPAR QSR in 2010.
