Wellbeing: International Policy Interventions - SD12004

This project has been commissioned, along with three other studies, to support the delivery of the Government’s commitment in the 2005 sustainable development strategy, Securing the Future. This says that:

“In order to get a better understanding and focus on wellbeing, by the end of 2006 the Government will sponsor cross-disciplinary work to bring together existing research and international experience and to explore how policies might change with an explicit wellbeing focus.” (Securing the future, p 23)

The strategy suggests that the output of this work could be used to inform future policy development and spending decisions. Also, if supported by the evidence it could be used provide a basis for a more comprehensive set of wellbeing indicators to support the UK sustainable development Framework and sustainable development strategies.

This project includes a systematic review to provide an overview of policy interventions undertaken in countries other than the UK that are or have been focussed on improving wellbeing. The study will provide a cross section of case studies looking at specific policy interventions at national, local and regional levels.

The case studies will aim to establish why and how the wellbeing focus was applied; what difference this focus made to the success of the policy; the drawbacks and advantages of the approach; and the possible implications for British policy and practice.

The final report will set out an overview of wellbeing centred policy interventions outside the UK, a summary of the case studies, and recommendations for any policy application and areas requiring further study or development.
