Environmental Assessment Tool for Biomaterials - NF0614

Description
The main objective of this project is to provide companies involved in the emerging biomaterials industry in the United Kingdom with ready access to the means and data to conduct comparative environmental assessments of their products in a format which gives confidence to their prospective customers about their claimed benefits. This will be achieved by means of a free-access package of information, data and tools which is accessible through a suitable national website. This outcome of the project will be relevant to the current government policy of encouraging the development of the biomaterials industry by reducing key barriers in the supply chain. The target group for the tool will be developers and companies, as well as their potential customers including those responsible for government procurement and subsequent accreditation.
Objective
1. Produce a clear explanation of the principles and approaches to the environmental assessment of the life cycle of biomaterials for a broad range of potential stakeholders.

2. Create a standard reporting format which is relatively easy to use and which presents results and their supporting evidence in an organised and transparent manner.

3. Develop a readily-accessible database of results which can be used to undertake the environmental assessment of biomaterials.

4. Demonstrate the application of the standard reporting format and the database by means of five case studies of the environmental assessment of selected biomaterials.

5. Prepare all material for dissemination by means of a suitable national website to a wide group of users within the emerging biomaterials industry.
