Development of a portable biosensor device for the determination of pesticides in food - PS2520
|
Description
The main objective of this proposal is to complete ongoing research and complete the development of a user friendly, low cost, portable biosensor device to explore the feasibility of ‘on-site’ testing to permit the screening for, or determination of, significant pesticide residues at the point of production, importation, storage or sale of foodstuffs.
For example, it is envisaged that such a device could be used as a pre-screening tool to allow immediate testing of rapid alert samples at the port of entry or distribution centre. Samples found to contain potential residues would be sent to the laboratory for confirmatory analysis whilst samples producing a negative result could be released into the UK food supply.
|
Objective
1) To produce a monoclonal antibody against one of the following pesticides; acephate, methamidophos, monocrotophos or methomyl (with the latter as the priority target).
2) To incorporate the monoclonal antibody in to a lateral flow device in order to produce a reliable, sensitive, low cost biosensor for the screening of one significant OP or carbamate pesticide residue in fruit.
3) To validate the performance of the biosensor by comparison with conventional techniques.
