Environmental pesticide loading during spray contamination - PS2209
|
Description
The main objective of this study is to investigate typical pesticide and water loadings associated with cleaning the sprayer in order to develop guidelines on appropriate cleaning regimes that will negate environmental concerns.
The project will largely involve field visits to working farms, encompassing a range of sprayer types and application practices, to establish typical loadings associated with current washing regimes, and loadings associated with decontamination methods being developed for HSE. A range of commonly used pesticides with differing physico-chemical properties will be examined. Some preliminary, experimental work will be conducted examining loadings from discrete areas of the sprayer (e.g. boom, wheels, tractor) the results of which will be used to support the field sampling methodology.
Quantifying pesticide loadings from sprayer cleaning is relevant to the key, evaluation role of PSD as it will enable PSD to assess any associated risk to the environment. Reducing pesticide pollution arising from sprayer activities will assist in Defra’s policy to protect and improve the rural environment and conserve biodiversity.

Objective
1. Agree study protocol.
2. Preliminary investigations under controlled conditions - discrete area loadings.
3. Field sampling on working farms to establish typical, realistic loadings.
4. Environmental risk assessment of washings and propose mitigating strategies as appropriate.
