Implementation of artificial methodology for generating lodging data for the purposes of VCU National Listing. - VS02008

Description
To investigate the implementation into National List VCU trialing of a mechanical method that apply a uniform lodging force to forage maize. In order to provide more data on the important but variable effect of wind in terms of lodging. If the implementation is carried out successful then the mechanical method of lodging assessment will be used to generate data for routine VCU assessments allowing the generation of more information on an important characteristic to aid decision making.

§ To validate a methodology for consistently applying a force to cause lodging on all varieties and therefore fairly assess they’re true potential to lodge.

§ To confirm the methodology can account for variation in crop maturity.

§ To assess the feasibility of using the methodology as a part of the VCU trial procedure.

This experiment will provide substantially more information on maize variety lodging. Data will be compared with results taken at other trials to establish if the lodging assessment in NL trials is an adequate reflection of their lodging under more uniform conditions.

A mechanical method of lodging assessment may then be incorporated into the VCU assessment to allow the generation of more information on an important characteristic. Which would improve a potentially limited data set for decision making.
