Development of strategies for control of classical swine fever by emergency vaccination with live attenuated vaccine - SE0778

Description
In the event of an outbreak of classical swine fever in the UK in the near future, decisions will be required concerning the use, or not, of vaccination as part of the control policy. Of the currently licensed vaccines against classical swine fever (CSF) the live attenuated vaccines are more suitable for use in an emergency situation, due to their superior efficacy when compared to the E2 based marker vaccines. Although the live CSF vaccines have been utilised for many years in the field there are certain aspects that are unclear about the efficacy of the vaccine in an emergency situation. This proposal aims to investigate how rapidly vaccination will provide a protection against viral transmission, if this protection is similar for different strains, if vaccination of pregnant sows has the potential to produce persistently infected piglets that would be a threat for subsequent outbreaks and if there is a risk that the vaccine strain can be transmitted from pregnant sows to offspring. |
