Further Studies on the incidence of Mac and Helicobacter organisms in water supplies. - WT02033

The DWI has supported a study of the prevalence of Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), and M.avium var paratuberculosis (MAP) in potable water in England.

01: Enlist the co-operation of water companies in obtaining samples of biofilm and deposits from three distribution systems.
02: Obtain water samples and samples of biofilms and deposits from storage tanks, bathroom taps and showers within domestic properties served by the distribution systems identified under objective 1.
03: To report on the prevalence and significance of MAC, MAP and HP isolated from these biofilm and water samples.

The Inspectorate has noted recent reports of the isolation of Helicobacter pylori (HP) bacteria in water supply systems, using PCR based techniques.
