Differential Metabolism of Chiral Compounds - PS2501

Description

The proposed work will involve undertaking a comprehensive literature survey of the differential metabolism of chiral compounds. Specifically, the differential metabolism of chiral pesticides will be reviewed with reference to the likelihood of significant differences occurring between either metabolism of different optical isomers or production of chiral metabolites. Possible sources of differential metabolism will be discussed including the identification of trends in classes of enzymes that have been shown to metabolise different optical isomers at different rates or produce different ratios of chiral products. Focussing predominantly on mammals and other farm animal species, the review will summarise current understanding of chiral metabolism, identify areas which require further research and suggest possible experimental approaches. This review will provide a scientific basis to guide policy on whether regulatory toxicology data is necessary for all isomers of a chiral pesticide.

An outline proposal for two further years of experimental work is included at Appendix 3.

Objective
1. Undertake a comprehensive literature search.
2. Review data on metabolism of chiral pesticides and other classes of chemicals.
3. Produce a strategy for further research.
4. Produce final report
