The development of multi-residue screening and confirmatory analysis methods for vedaprofen, carprofen and tolfenamic acid - VM02131

Description
Objectives: 1). To establish and validate a multi-residue screening procedure for vedaprofen, carprofen and tolfenamic acid capable of detecting the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID’s) drugs at ½ MRL in liver for appropriate species; and 2). To develop a mass spectrometric confirmatory analysis procedure for the NSAID’s with the capability of quantifying them at ½ MRL in liver of appropriate species. Policy Relevance: UK and EU legislation on drug residues in food seeks to protect the consumer from over exposure to illegal drugs and veterinary medicines and is designed to ensure that veterinary medicines can be used safely. Compliance with this legislation requires the development of suitable analytical methods to enable cost effective monitoring of veterinary drug residues to be conducted under non-statutory and statutory surveillance programmes. The proposal presents an approach for the development of effective and cost efficient multi-residue screening and mass spectrometric confirmatory analysis methods for specified NSAID’s. A successful project will deliver these methods for use in statutory and non-statutory veterinary drug surveillance programmes. The proposal thus meets the requirements of ROAME A for VM02. Intended Use of results: Circulation to appropriate laboratories (as defined by DEFRA) to provide an analytical strategy for the regulatory control of vedaprofen, carprofen and tolfenamic acid as part of the National Drug Surveillance Programme.
Objective
01. To develop a multi-residue extraction/purification method for the three drugs from liver samples of appropriate species;02. To develop a method of analysis of the extracts to provide an effective multi-residue screening procedure;03. To develop a mass spectrometric confirmatory analysis method for the three NSAID’s; and04. To validate the multi-residue screening procedure and the confirmatory analysis method.05. Production of the Final Report.
