Role of NO in water relations : Potential sources of NO in plants - HH3605NFV

Water stress is a main limitation to crop yield. Lack of water has a profound effects on cell expansion and hence on leaf enlargement and photosynthetic C fixation, but there are also many stages of the plant life cycle that are sensitive to water stress. Alleviation of stress at such sensitive periods, for example, seedling establishment, flower formation, seed set etc has clear benefits to final crop yield. The objective of this proposal is to build on the successful work carried out on a previous Defra funded project (HH3703NFV), that demonstrated that Nitric oxide (NO) is a key signalling component in plant responses to water stress.

The aim of this project is to investigate the potential sources of NO in plants. In particular we will assess the contributions of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and nitrate reductase (NR), via pharmacological, biochemical and genetic approaches. The work will include both brassica and legume species as our preliminary work suggests NO is generated through different sources in these plants. Better understanding of the biochemical events that occur in response to water stress will provide the underpinning work required for the development of treatments to improve water use or for selection of crop varieties with improved water use effeciency. This work is thus appropriate for DEFRA funding under Roame HH36 :Sustainable use of natural resources & labours.
