Nuclear hormone receptors in marine invertebrates and effects of endocrine disrupting compounds - CB01027

Little is known about the endocrinology of invertebrates, but nuclear hormone receptors (NHR) are likely to be the cellular end-point of endocrine signalling processes and the mediators of cellular responses. The application of genomic strategies to invertebrates, adapting knowledge of mechanisms, molecules and sequences from vertebrates, may be able to provide details of invertebrate endocrine systems, together with methods to investigate how these systems may be affected by endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs).

This project therefore aims to develop hormone-responsive gene arrays from selected marine invertebrates and to investigate how they are influenced by exposure to putative EDCs. The project characterises normal endocrine systems in selected marine invertebrates and provides tools to assess the effects of potential endocrine disrupters on those systems.
