The influence of store type and climatic variation on the nitrogen dynamics in stored farm slurries - ES0117
Description
The overall objective of this project will be to quantify the effects of slurry store characteristics and weather conditions on the concentrations of total-N and total ammoniacal-N (TAN) in stored slurry when it is spread to land in order to produce a simple predictive model that can be applied to slurry stored on commercial farms. The model of the influences on slurry-N dynamics during storage will be based on previous work and the experimental data obtained in this study. This model will be validated by data on slurry analyses at spreading obtained from slurry stores on commercial farms at various locations in England and Wales to give a broad spread of rainfall, wind speed and temperature during storage.
Objective
The overall objective of this project is to quantify the effects of slurry store characteristics and weather conditions on the concentrations of tot-N and TAN in stored slurry when it is spread to land in order to produce a simple predictive model that can be applied to slurry stored on commercial farms..
There are seven specific objectives.
1. To quantify the effects of SA/V ratio on tot-N and TAN contents of cattle and pig slurries at spreading.
2. To quantify the effects of wind speed and turbulence intensity at the liquid surface on tot-N and TAN contents of cattle and pig slurries at spreading.
3. To quantify the effects of the balance of rainfall and evaporation on tot-N and TAN contents of cattle and pig slurries at spreading.
4. To quantify the effects of top versus bottom filling on tot-N and TAN contents of cattle and pig slurries at spreading.
5. To produce a simple predictive model of slurry-N dynamics during storage, based on conveniently-obtained information.
6. To validate the model by obtaining data from a range of stores and locations on commercial farms.
7. To update advice on slurry application rates if significant differences in the TAN content of slurries stored by different methods are confirmed.
